Bobby's ears pricked up at the mention of a midnight party. He'd heard about such things in his first couple of years but had sort of brushed it off as a rumour from the older students as something that all the older students 'did' but that no-one actually did, just said they did, to be braver or something.
It honestly sounded fun, sneaking out - making sure no-one got caught, or enough of them getting caught that nothing serious could happen if they did, not like they could put dozens of students in detention at once... could they? He didn't remember having been in detention before but it didn't sound like fun. On the other hand, sneaking out for a midnight party didn't seem the kind of thing that was serious enough to warrant a more serious punishment - if it really did go on the way he'd heard, it was almost like it was quietly tolerated by the staff...
He didn't say anything, just listened in case Grace said something more, while helping himself to another couple of slices of the excellent roast beef and another Yorkshire pudding - while the food at Hogwarts was always excellent, the opening feast was more than just a hearty meal, it was something more, even though Bobby hadn't ever quite figured out in his own mind why the food tasted a little bit more magical than the rest of the year's meals even though he was sure it was all cooked the same way.
It was something he'd picked up in transfiguration class that one could not magic food out of nothing - that Gamp's Law of Elementary Transfiguration explicitly made note of it as an exception to what could be transfigured or otherwise created. Since there was clearly a lot of food here, it wasn't subject to engorgement charms, and when it appeared in the Great Hall it was something akin to apparated there from the kitchen. He wondered idly where the kitchens actually were - it was something he'd not actually thought about in his time so far at Hogwarts, but there had to be a reasonably-sized kitchen somewhere in the castle.
And if there was a kitchen, what other things might there be that he simply hadn't noticed?
