The Pureblood grimaced at the mention of the cabal using sex as a means to get what they wanted. It was such a crass modus operandi, and Pyxis would be extremely disappointed in his older cousin if he'd risked ruining their family's reputation by falling for such a cheap ploy.

The Occlumens was clearly unhappy as Odhrán speculated on what they wanted from his Cousin, but he couldn't deny his friends' words made sense. If one wanted to conceal illegal activities be it the smuggling of potions and ingredients, or the exchange of galleons what better way than to use an international potions empire as a front? Pyxis would wring his Cousin's neck if he'd landed their family in it because he couldn't keep it in his pants; that is if there was anything left of him after their grandfather was through with him. If there was one thing Callum Hartridge valued above all else it was maintaining their family's legacy both the parts publicly known and the more hidden aspects of it.

"I highly doubt it... Edward and I aren't the closest" he admitted in a soft almost disappointed tone. While Pyxis and his Cousin were perfectly cordial and even met for drinks on occasion they were far too competitive to become close friends. Pyxis envied his Cousin's superior potions skills while his Cousin was miffed at the fact that Pyxis' skills with the mind arts had surpassed his long ago. Then there was the fact Pyxis had envied Edward position as heir in their younger days. While he'd come to appreciate the anonymity and freedom that came with being a lower member of the family; he certainly didn't envy his Cousin Farren the pressure to marry and now remarry she faced, it had been a bitter pill to swallow during his youth.

"I think that would be for the best... I can see what details I can wrangle out of Winthrop during William's birthday while you see what you can discover from Fernsby... just be careful." He didn't feel the need to mention out loud how dangerous it was to use Legilimency on the Chief Warlock. If something went wrong... well Odhrán could find himself sharing the same cell as his infamous father.

Pyxis took another sip of his wine before he decided it was best to turn the subject to more light-hearted matters. "Why don't you take me on a tour? I'm sure a place like this has some impressive features you'd love to show off." He suggested with a teasing smirk.

Pyxis smiled as he watched Odhrán pause in front of the portrait of his famed Hartridge ancestor. Under different circumstances, he would have boasted about the importance of his ancestor's discoveries, but he decided now was not the time to show off. Pyxis instead watched the memory unfold and waited until they had exited the Pensieve once more before answering the Irish man's question.

"That would be Edward Paulinus Hartridge, the direct heir of my grandfather Callum Hartridge since his father died of a particularly vicious case of Dragon Pox. Edwardis succeeded in the line of succession by his sons Peter and Sheldon and after that comes me." He paused at this point. The Pureblood looked sheepish for a moment, as he realised Odhrán did not particularly care. As the son of a traditional English pureblood family, talk of social hierarchy and placement was beaten into Pyxis as a child. It was sometimes hard to forget those raised outside of the insular circles the Hartridge and Abercrombie families ran in would consider such things trivial at best.

"But more relevant to this discussion, I think, he works as one of the directors for my grandfather's company; he is often involved in creating contracts with foreign governments and dignitaries for the most needed potions." He frowned as he considered his companion's query. Pyxis was honestly baffled by the implication of their recollections. They were not the type of people he could imagine his grandfather associating with, and what benefits could membership in such a group bring to the heir of one of the richest families in their society? "I wish I could offer more, but I'm as clueless as you are. Honestly, I thought he was having an affair... I hate to say it of my cousin, but he's not exactly known for being the loyal husband." He grimaced at the last part; promiscuity was not something the Abercrombie approved of.

Pyxis took a bite of the latest refreshment offered by Odhrán's elves before he moved on. "But the name of the woman he is meeting with is Sylvia Pendergrast. I wouldn't say I know her, but we are certainly acquainted. She works for the Time room, and there have been occasions where her work has overlapped with the studies of my colleagues in the Mind Room." He couldn't say much more than that. The Unspekables were known for taking their privacy seriously through the use of stringent vows. Pyxis had only been able to share as much as he had due to what his companion had been able to glean from her thoughts.

He took a sip of his beverage while he ruminated quietly on their latest discovery. The idea of his Cousin associating with such people was unsettling, to say the least. "I think the more important question is what do they want from Edward? She mentioned about making a choice... if we could figure out what she wanted from my Cousin it might help us discover their overall goal." The Hartridge family had its secrets, a collection of rare magical tomes and artefacts the average wizard would covet, but they generally avoided advertising it. Even now, in the presence of someone he'd grown to trust and respect, Pyxis was reluctant to muse on the importance of these items out loud.

Auror Harrison offered his companion a warm smile as she expressed her gratitude. This one was far too nice to be stuck with a pretentious arse like Abercrombie.

Ah, and now it made sense! Abercrombie was known for dealing with international diplomats as part of his work for the International Magical Office of Law! The woman was probably looking for some tips. After all, Chris and Abercrombie were like two sides of a coin in some ways. Abercrombie and his ilk made the law while Chris enforced it! Well, as much as one could impose it with the sinister undertones of corruption at every corner. Although, if she wanted the dullard's help in a professional capacity, why didn't she ask? What was up with the pretence?

"You must be a woman of importance if they send you on such missions" he offered brightly, as he led her through the library until they reached the relevant section. It was in the culture section of the library next to the books recently donated by the Comhairle na Draíochtaon on Leprechauns. "I can't say I'm an expert, but I was told this one is good for someone who needs to learn about the magical creatures of Scotland quickly." He held up a tome that briefly outlined information on magical creatures native to Scotland. It was perhaps more suited to a student studying for their OWLs at Hogwarts, but as stated it was not his area of expertise.

When she outright asked him about his work Auror Harrison sighed as the jig was up. He would not have minded spending a bit more time with the beautiful blond, but he wasn't about to outright lie to her. That wasn't the type of man he wanted to be. "I work as an Auror" he answered smoothly before extending a hand. "That reminds me... I never properly introduced myself. I'm Auror Harrison, but feel free to call me Chris." He was intrigued to see her reaction to the news he wasn't the man she'd been asking around about!

There was nothing but silence, dreaded silence!

His nerves set in once the adrenaline worn off. The Pureblood could feel his hands grow clammy with sweat, and his heart pounded as though he had just run a marathon. Pyxis had spent the past twenty-six years striving for perfection. When the family told him, as a boy, he should be a perfect gentleman he read every book on etiquette their library held. When they told him he should live up to the Abercrombie family's reputation for being intelligent he graduated from Hogwarts with six NEWTs and went on to become one of the most accomplished Legilimens and Occlumens in the country before he turned thirty. When his mother spoke of arranging his marriage one day, Pyxis dutifully resigned himself to a loveless marriage solely for producing the next generation of Abercrombies. Pyxis knew it was needed desperately, even if he was not the heir like Farren, due to the family's dwindling numbers.

The Occlumens had just thrown all that out the window and openly cast his lot with Cousin Farren and her latest bout of rebellion. He had just challenged their wisdom and exposed a weakness he was sure none of the elders would want to acknowledge. How would Spencer react? Was Pyxis to be disowned, tossed out of Dalemain with all chances of gaining the social favour promised earlier lost? Would he be punished in some other manner? Perhaps he would be forced to marry a particularly odious match solely to put him back in his place.

Pyxis' life could now be ruined, and yet he did not regret his actions. Cousin Farren deserved to be happy. She deserved to be with someone who brought joy to her life, someone who would treat her with the respect she deserved. Farren did not deserve to be saddled with two traumatised teenagers who would undoubtedly resent any attempts to replace their mother. She did not deserve to be married to a lewd, political radical who was known for the occasional hot-headed display despite Spencer's attempts to convince them of Ambrose's good nature. The thought of Farren being exposed any further to Lord Voldemort and his psychotic men was unfathomable. A life with O'Dwyer, anything, had to be better than that.

"Thank you Lord Abercrombie" was his simple response to Spencer's cool comment about setting up a meeting with Miss Selwyn. He felt relieved that he wasn't thrown out there and then. Not that Pyxis was naïve enough to assume that was the end of the matter, but he could deal with anything short of disownment when the time came.

The Occlumens winched at the reference to Farren's affair. He had not realised Lord Abercrombie was aware of that particular impropriety. Pyxis had loudly disproved when he had learnt of it from Farren, but the affair was tame compared to the scandal other families were embroiled in, especially since it had remained unnoticed by the press. However, he knew there was no point in pointing that out. An affair with her dead husband's best friend was ill-advised and there was no point in pretending otherwise.

As Spencer continued his rant Pyxis chose to lift his utensils and start to busy himself with the task of eating dinner. His Cousins intent was obvious when Lord Abercrombie lay it out like that, but how could he not see the benefits of Farren's actions? She had played a part in strengthening the ties between their family and others. She had accumulated wealth and more importantly influence, which would one day be yielded by the son they were desperate for her to produce.

Outwardly, Pyxis remained the picture of a composed gentleman as Victoria interjected. However, he was truly horrified by the fact she wished to not only marry his cousin off to a member of her cult but force the mark upon his Cousin? His body stiffened and his genial mask grew cold as he looked to Spencer to assess the patriarch's reaction to Victoria's outrageous demand. It took all of Pyxis' masterful self-control to not argue with the woman. Surely, Spencer would see the foolishness of tying Farren to Riddle's cause! The family needed someone to remain politically neutral in the event Victoria and Farrah's involvement blew up in their faces.

His gaze turned to Farren. His eyes slightly narrowed in disapproval. He used his Legilimency to project to his Cousin the anger and disbelief he currently felt. Pyxis also promised that he would side with her, and he would do whatever it took to ensure her skin remained unblemished.

The Pureblood sighed as he broke the connection and returned to his dinner. He just wanted to leave. He needed a good scotch. The last he projected to Farren as an invitation to join him once this farce was completed. This was not the evening he thought it would be.

It's good to be back in Hogwarts!

Sebastian thought to himself as he sat at the Hufflepuff table with a bright smile on his boyish features. Don't get him wrong, he loved spending time with his parents, but the loss of magic all summer had been so restrictive. It was a stupid law! Why shouldn't they cast spells if no muggles were around and there was a magical adult present to fix any mishaps? Not that it mattered now! He was back at Hogwarts, and by the time next summer came around he'd be seventeen and free to cast spells every minute of every day if he so wished.

"This is our year; I can feel it!" The sixteen-year-old boy commented as a few of his housemates discussed this year's Quidditch tournament. It felt strange to be in his sixth year, to know that it would not be long before he went out into the big bad world. Sebastian also felt grateful that he wasn't stuck in that position now. His OWL results had been less than stellar. With Exceeds Expectations in Charms, Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, Defence against the Dark Arts and Averages in the rest, he had barely gotten back into School. But at least he had not gotten any Poor or Dreadful or worse a Troll. That had to count for something, right?

The Hufflepuff listened to the Sorting Hat's song with half a mind. His stomach growled in protest. Sebastian could not wait for the sorting to be over and their dinner to appear. He let out a chuckle as one of the first years, something Harrison, he'd been too shocked to catch the first name, accidentally knocked the hat off its stool. To the boys credit he'd quickly picked the hat off the floor and looked down at the crowd brightly despite the red tinge to his cheeks. Well, that sorting was certainly going to be fun. He thought with bemusement. Hopefully the hat would not take the issue too seriously. The last thing the poor boy needed was a wrong sorting, as a result of some vendetta.

He lounged back in his seat as the hat continued the important task of sorting. He offered polite claps for every first year sorted and particularly loud cheers for anyone sorted into the badger house. It really was good to be back!

Christopher had thought the Hogwarts rumour mill was extraordinary as a boy. The obsession with gossip, the more sordid the better, was expected of teenagers. They were hormonal bundles of energy cooped up with too much free time and not enough activities to distract them. What he hadn't expected back then was the continuation of the behaviour into adulthood. It wasn't just teenagers who sat around speculating on the latest celebrity scandals or avidly discussing the lives of their peers when they weren't present. The only difference was adults liked to think they were more sophisticated about it.

With that in mind, it was hardly surprising word quickly travelled through certain circles within the Ministry when a pretty young blond started making enquiries about Pyxis Abercrombie. Christopher had just finished writing a report on an interview with a witch accused of casting a few trivial hexes on a Squib neighbour when the Department's secretary Imelda Burke burst into his office to tell him the latest Ministry gossip. She'd heard of the pretty blonde's inquiries from Leticia Johnson, who had heard it from Alexander Davies with the Department of Mysteries, who had heard it straight from the source.

Auror Harrison usually tried to ignore such trivialities, but the report he'd just finished had been extraordinarily dull, so he listened to the woman's comments with an unexpected openness. He snorted with amusement at the idea of this upcoming encounter. Of course Christopher had heard of Mr Abercrombie. He was constantly in the tabloids along with his cousin Farren, the heir of his infamous family. The muggleborn could concede the man was conventionally handsome; there was a reason Mr Abercrombie had won Witch Weekly's most eligible bachelor of 1968 award. However, the Pureblood was as dull as watching paint dry, and the way he pranced around with his nose in the air made him as appealing as the contents of Christopher's lavatory.

A mixture of boredom and morbid curiosity led the Auror to leave his office and head to the Ministry library for his lunch break. Could Abercrombie even converse with a member of the fairer sex without making her want to die of boredom at best and claw his eyes out at worst? It was hard to imagine that pretentious dullard being capable of summoning even the slightest trace of charm. Thankfully, his office was quite close to the library, and he made it there within two minutes.

Christopher had only opened the pages of his chosen text, a book on advanced potion brewing when an unfamiliar woman entered the library. He instantly noted her beauty. Could this be the mysterious woman Imelda spoke about? Christopher hadn't planned to get involved. He had hoped to simply watch Mr Abercrombie's stumbled attempts at Charm. However, who was he to deny a request for help? Auror Harrison offered the woman a winning smile. Unlike Abercrombie, he knew how to be pleasant company. "Yes, of course! I'm always happy to help out a colleague. Especially, and I hope you don't mind me saying this, one as pretty as yourself! So what book are you looking for?"

A gentleman would have offered the woman his name, that way she would know he was not the one she sought and could depart with relatively little fuss. However, he was bored, and what was the harm in keeping her company until Mr Pretentious came along?

Pyxis nodded when Odhrán offered to translate if needed. He would be so annoyed if the entire memory was in blasted Gaelic. The only words of his companion's Neanderthal language Pyxis knew were dia duit, and he wasn't sure he was even pronouncing that right. The Irish language's roots in Celtic languages rather than Germanic or Romantic meant the languages he did know would be of little use, and the Abercrombie hated having to ask for help! Blast Odhrán for exposing him to the dirty back alley of languages!

The Pureblood breathed deeply before he plunged into the Pensieve. Pyxis had always found it better to analyse the memories from within. It was more intimate than watching from outside the bowl as a casual bystander. Pyxis took in his new surroundings, which he instantly noted were familiar. The Ministry worker had been there before on business. The Diplomat who owned the home was a genial albeit tedious fellow if Pyxis recalled correctly. Thankfully, they spoke English, and he did not need to ask for his friend's help.

His brow arched at the Chief Warlock's uncouth behaviour. Pyxis had always found Chief Warlock Fernsby to be the epitome of professionalism. His grandfather had once noted she could get heated during the debates, which took place behind closed doors on particularly contentious issues, but an angry shout during a formal dinner party? It was utterly reprehensible. Fernsby would have been the talk of Cousin Farren and her gaggle of socialite friends had they been around to witness such unbecoming behaviour.

Pyxis quickly forgot the scandalous behaviour as the next section of his friend's recollection took out. It was clear what had happened. The Young Auror had stumbled upon something he shouldn't, and Fernsby had used her influence to not only remove him from the Ministry but utterly destroy him! What mysteries lay behind the bank's walls? It had to be something valuable, besides the obvious, if this Cabal felt it was important enough to deprive a man of his sanity.

The Purebloods keen mind quickly made the connection. This Aurelius Audish had to be a part of the Cabal, and wasn't that the name of the healer who'd once been assigned to Miss Ni Daláigh if his past research into his friend's background was correct? If his suspicions were correct it was no wonder Odhrán hated this group! Like the Auror who'd earned their ire destroying the Irish Man's father's career hadn't been enough for them. They'd sought to destroy his sister too.

The Pureblood frowned in annoyance as they reached the next memory. He lazily waved his wand to stop the memory and emerged long enough to explain he needed his help in understanding what was happening. He smiled at Odhrán as the duo returned to the memories with the older man there to translate the basics of what was said. A hit man and a veela trafficker? Why on earth would Chief Warlock Fernsby associate with scum like that? And what did it have to do with a bank in Bern? The more Pyxis learned about this mysterious cabal the more confounding they became.

Pyxis watched the final memory unfold with narrowed eyes. A sick feeling developed in the pit of his stomach as the woman turned to face Odhrán. It was Sylvia Prenderghast! He knew her and not just from the Ministry.

With a lazy flick of the Briton's wand, the duo appeared outside the Pensieve once more. "I am truly sorry" he offered in an uncharacteristically sombre enough. "What they've done to that Auror and to your father and sister it's unforgivable." Pyxis decided it was best to not try and hide the conclusions he'd reached. If they were going to work together it needed to be from a place of honesty. Even if following that would prove to be exceptionally difficult for a man who hid a large portion of his life from those he cared for, even his Cousin Farren who was practically a sister to him!

Pyxis sighed as he looked at Odhrán. "I can't believe Sylvia Prenderghast is involved in all of this!" Although his primary focus was on the mind room and hers the time room their paths had crossed on occasion. However, there was one particular incident which sprung to mind.

"I don't know if this is important, it might mean nothing but I think it's my time to share a memory." He placed his wand on his temple and focused on pouring out the relevant memory. The man watched the silver and grey swirls sadly.

The memory took place in the hallways of Pyxis' Cousin Edwards suite in the Hartridge Estate. The walls were decorated with the portraits of Hartridge ancestors who watched him with regal bearings. The Pureblood himself moved through the corridor at a slow pace. He was slightly early to an agreed-upon appointment with Edward, but his slightly older Cousin probably wouldn't care. It wasn't as though Pyxis couldn't busy himself until Edward was ready to leave.

His brows arched as he heard voices from inside the study his Cousin used as an office. The fact one of them belonged to a woman was particularly intriguing. It couldn't have been Sarah. She had taken herself off to her father's estate for the week. Was Edward having an affair? How ghastly! But he wouldn't be entirely surprised truth be told.

The sound of the woman's voice through the doorway grew sharper. She had moved to the other side of it. Her hand on the handle if the way the door knob tilted slightly was anything to go by. "You need to make a decision Edward! Are you in or are you out? Pick before the choice is made for you!"

The door opened and there stood the same woman from the last memory Odhrán had shared with Pyxis. Those same sharp features were now narrowed in anger as a house-elf appeared to escort her off the property.

Chris listened to Deitha's explanation with keen interest. She was, clearly, an astute woman with a firm understanding of magical theory. It was a shame some of her magical practices were dubious at best. Such a waste Chris thought. He snapped back to the present as she neared the end of her explanation about the power of her illusions.

Auror Harrison snorted with open amusement as she explained the method she used to dazzle them. It was a hilarious image in his mind; the Creatures the wizarding world regarded with fear and suspicion running away scared because they thought someone had cleaned up their home. A part of him felt tempted to go to Azkaban and try it! The more logical part argued such action would be foolhardy; what if something went wrong and the Dementors fed on his soul? He could not risk it! Christopher had a son who needed him to come home to him at the end of the day.

The Auror watched, stone-faced, as she transformed his office into a more idealised version. "Is it that obvious I once proudly wore Gryffindor robes?" Auror Harrison joked in reference to the wallpaper's overtones. While Deitha had explained her status as a Durmstrang graduate, he doubted someone could grow up in Britain without at least learning about the houses of Hogwarts. A part of Chris felt tempted to cast some spells to make the illusion real, but he ultimately decided against it. It would only give the odious buffoon an opportunity to moan about the evils of changing Ministry property without permission.

"I suppose I might" he conceded but chose not to further elaborate on the discussion. While Miss Albron's commentary was interesting he had never been one for in-depth discussions on the theory of magic. It was better to leave such things to the Unspeakables with their vested interest in discovering the deeper meaning behind the force witches and wizards yielded.

"As promised, you are now welcome to go! Thank you for meeting with me today Miss Albron. You have given me a lot to think about." While he spoke Christopher waved his wand and watched as the table returned to its regular size. His gaze turned to the pieces of parchment he kept at the end of his desk, and Chris began to write. It was a clear dismissal from the Auror who felt disgruntled despite his polite wording.

Sebastian had been quite surprised when he received an invitation to join Bobby Cashmore in Ireland for a couple of days. The Hufflepuff would not have described them as friends due to the age gap. Sebastian assumed the younger boy was at an age where things like his first trip to Hogsmeade and whether to take Ancient Runes or Arithmancy were his primary worries while Sebastian was preparing to begin his NEWT and was looking increasingly towards life after Hogwarts. He knew he wanted to become a famous actor on the West End, but how would he go about reaching this dream?

However, he had always gotten on with the Ravenclaw. Bobby was friendly, extremely smart(more intelligent than Sebastian, truth be told), and their shared muggle-orientated background meant they had someone to vent their exasperation to when their pureblood schoolmates were particularly idiotic. Seriously, some of the statements his classmates came out with were hilarious! It was as though they thought they were living in the 1870s rather than the 1970s. No electricity, arranged marriages, the sacred 28, house-elves. At times the wizarding world felt like something out of those period novels his mother liked to read.

It was for that reason he had accepted the invitation along with the fact he had never been to Ireland before! It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and get to know somewhere new! Sebastian was surprised when his parents agreed. His mother was reluctant. However, the sixth-year's father argued the boy was sixteen now, practically a man, and he should be able to handle a few days away, especially since he would likely be under the direct supervision of Bobby's parents for most of the trip.

The trip was going well so far! Mr and Mrs Cashmore were welcoming hosts though Grace had gotten more of their attention, which he was thankful for! While he understood what taxes were, his father had grumbled about them often enough, Seb had no idea if his mother paid them for her job at St. Mungos. He honestly had not thought to ask. His mind usually drifted away when matters of finance came up. The Matthews family were closer to poor than rich, and that was all he needed to know.

Sebastian gave Mr Cashmore a polite nod before he followed after Grace. The teen smiled as he entered the arcade! This place was the bomb! He watched as Grace accidentally bumped into the random red-headed muggle girl, but the Hufflepuff chose not to comment as the Gryffindor had the decency to apologise. Instead, he made his way over to them and waited for Bobby to decide what game he wanted them to try first. He was the birthday boy, after all!

Pyxis looked sheepish as Odhrán shared that he owned a Pensieve. It was obvious in hindsight that an object like that would be necessary for a healer who specialised in illnesses of the mind. However, he had become so accustomed to being the only one to own one he had not even thought to check. The Briton hated getting caught behaving in a rash manner. He would have to try and ensure he didn't do so again in future.

The Pureblood watched with cool disinterest as a house-elf popped in to receive their orders before disappearing once more. While Pyxis had never been one to torment house-elves for kicks, he had little interest in a species that was clearly inferior.

Pyxis considered his companion's query. While it was good to know all he could about this mysterious cabal their work at St. Mungo's was hardly a priority; since Pyxis didn't work there and his family usually relied on the services of private healers, in the interest of discretion. In their experience, St. Mungo's employees weren't known for keeping their mouths shut if they thought there was money to be made from selling their patient's private information.

The last was a particularly significant statement since Pyxis was not exactly known for his warm and fussy disposition. "After that, why don't we review your memories relating to their activities at the Ministry? I imagine if there's an area I might pick up something you've missed that would be it." Pyxis wasn't trying to put his companion down, but he worked at the Ministry and Odhrán did not. Therefore, there were bound to be little things he'd picked up an outsider would not be privy to.

It was then Willoughby returned with the metal basin indented with the runes that identified it as a pensive. "Master Callum says Young Master Pyxis had better return his property safe and sound" the elf castigated in the tone usually associated with someone speaking to a child. If Pyxis were less composed he would have blushed, but instead, he eyed the elf coolly before he stated"Noted." The elf nodded before disappearing from sight.

Since he desired to move on from the embarrassing moment, Pyxis turned to Odhrán and asked"Shall we get started?" Before the man could speak.

Chris frowned when Miss Albron tried, yet again, to warn him off discovering the identity of her contractor. The Auror was getting thoroughly sick of the woman's condescending concern. However, Chris opted to leave it be, as the Auror feared he would only come off as petulant if he argued the point when he did not have the legal authority to force a name out of her.

The Auror winched at the word innocent. Punishing someone for a crime they did not commit was abominable to an Auror who tried to serve justice. However, Auror Harrison was not as surprised as he would have liked. The sad truth was the Ministry had a rot that needed purging. Unfortunately, Chris did not have the authority to deal with it how he would have liked; like most things, corruption often came from the top down.

The thirty-two-year-old scowled as she described her threat to tie the prisoner's ghost to the earthly plane. His earlier disgust returned in full force. Her behaviour was atrocious. What right did she have to mentally torture anyone in such a manner? Although that odious buffoon Goyle would disagree, Spode needed punishment. Chris would never have allowed such behaviour to continue unbidden had he been on duty that night. The fact Spode's report only held vague references to Miss Albron's threat was hardly a surprise. The man was not exactly known for his work ethic.

Chris nodded in agreement when Deitha described how the Patronus functioned. It had been explained to him similarly when Chris learned the spell as a part of his Auror training. It would hardly do for those likely to encounter the creatures as part of their regular duties to be ignorant of them, after all.

The Auror watched with widened eyes as her supposed anti-Patronus burst into existence. He could feel the projection of fear it radiated, although it felt muted. Chris assumed the woman must have been holding back. "I am surprised they did not welcome it as a long-lost cousin" he joked. Chris was referring to the menacing aura Dementors gave off in their own right. It still seemed strange to him. Dementors were creatures of darkness; they thrived on fear, pain, and loss. Why would they fear something that projected the very thing that drew them? Even if they had little interest in the illusion, the fear it would have sparked in nearby prisoners should have been considered a bonus.

The thirty-two-year-old stepped closer to examine the illusion thoroughly. Auror Harrison managed to keep the aura of fear it projected at bay. Chris had been through a lot in his life. The artificial aura they projected seemed like nothing next to the genuine fear he had, such as something happening to his son. "One last question, and then you are free to leave." There was little left for him to query, constricted as he was by the law he had vowed to uphold. "Explain it to me like I am an idiot; why did Dementors feel frightened of a creature that helped create the conditions they thrive in?"

Auror Harrison openly rolled his eyes when Miss Albron commented on his mettle. She was clearly being sarcastic; most people would have reacted with equal hostility to the idea of their kid in danger.

His expression was schooled into a more professional façade of neutrality when she spoke of the person who hired her. Chris resisted the urge to sigh upon hearing her concerns. He was more than capable of deciding who he was and was not willing to cross; he did not need her to decide for him. However, he would have to show more compassion if he hoped to win her round. "Miss. Albron, the notes kept by this Department are strictly confidential. If you are worried about being in danger, we can ensure your name is kept out of it if we deem further action necessary."

It was tempting to keep pushing the subject, to attempt needling further information out of her. However, the Auror knew there was not much more he could do. The case was not severe enough to threaten her with a fine. While Veritaserum was a class five restricted object, which meant the use of it in criminal cases had to be approved by the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, or a Senior Auror enacted to act in the Head's absence. There was little point in trying to bluff and threaten her with it as Miss Albron seemed far too informed to fall for such a ruse. However, that did not mean he could not put the pressure on in other areas.

He ignored the remark about the Department's paperwork. The sad truth was they were as corrupt as anywhere else when it came to money or the exchange of political favours. Chris was confident, if he searched, he would find something as bemusing as a muggle signing their name 'Mickey Mouse' on a piece of paperwork.

With a casual flick of his wand, the table separating them shrunk to the size of a model commonly found in a muggle doll house. "Miss Albron, while we cannot control the forms of magic taught on foreign soil, it is important that I remind you the use of blood magic, necromancy and other fields commonly referred to as 'dark' is forbidden here in Britain. I will need you to demonstrate the illusions you conjured that night."

The Auror was partially playing mind games with the woman. He wanted to put her under pressure and create a crack in the cool façade she had presented thus far. There was also a part of him curious to see something capable of striking fear in a Dementor's heart.

Pyxis nodded in agreement when Odhrán commented that he shouldn't draw attention to himself. However, he had to bite his tongue rather than make the snide remark that came to mind. Any good Slytherin knew better than to give up such a tactical advantage; only a Gryffindor with their foolish notions of nobility would have considered such a thing. Pyxis mused on how Odhrán would have been at Hogwarts. The Pureblood decided the Healer was a quintessential Ravenclaw; he was quiet but studious with a brilliant mind. However, he lacked the ambition and cunning needed to be a great Slytherin. His decision to give up a high-powered position to run a small business in a dump like Knockturn Alley was proof of that. It was a decision Pyxis would never understand or approve of, even if he did not comment on it out of politeness.

The Pureblood snorted at the reference to Winthrop's mission. This Cabal had to be desperate if they relied on an idiot like that to achieve their goals.

"But why would they view me as a threat?" He mused out loud. Pyxis agreed with Odhrán's assessment, and he found it troubling. "Their end game cannot be about traditional political radicalism. They would all be flocking to this new Dark Lord and his men if that was the case, not acting individually. Nor can it be about polluting our world with muggle culture and ideals. Some you suspect of being involved wouldn't countenance such a thing." It was a disturbing conundrum, but Odhrán was right; if they could figure out why it would make anticipating their next move easier. Thankfully, finding out their plans for him should be a relatively easy venture. It was much easier to skim through memories when the subject of them was at the forefront of the unsuspecting victim's thoughts.

"No, it isn't much of a plan" he agreed in a clipped tone. Pyxis had never believed in beating about the bush. "Sadly, it is the best we could hope for in these trying circumstances" he offered in a more reconciliatory tone. The Pureblood grabbed one of the nearby canapes and gently bit into it. The action was as much about giving himself time to think as genuine hunger.

Suddenly, he clicked his finger and called out "Willoughby." A house elf appeared in a grey cotton sack with a prominent H embroidered on the front. "Fetch me grandfather's pensive from his study and ensure any memories currently in it are returned to their containers first." Pyxis shuddered at the thought of Callum's reaction if he were to suspect his grandson of sharing a personal memory with someone he did not know or trust.

When the elf disappeared, he turned to Odhrán. "I think we should look at those memories of your father's you mentioned along with any others relevant to the cabal you may have. Perhaps looking at them together and from the perspective of a third party might help us learn something new." And if not it would at least ensure he was up to scratch before his impending encounter with Winthrop.

Chris watched with a blank expression as Miss Albron shuffled in her seat. She seemed nervous, which was surprising for someone in her line of work. Was there something more to this case than he initially thought? Her reaction was rather intriguing, and he looked forward to getting to the bottom of it.

Auror Harrison grimaced at the mention of Dark Magic. It was a horrid practice that needed to be made extinct by the wizarding community as a whole! The self-professed Dark Witch's explanation only strengthened his belief. The Patronus Charm was one of the most powerful pieces of magic in their world, a spell that allowed them to draw upon the happiest moments of their lives and create an avatar of said positively. The damage to their souls caused by dark magic must be immense if it turned something so positive into a source of fear.

The man's disgust grew as the woman proceeded to explain her job with what sounded like pride. Chris had dedicated his life to helping other people, even when other people hardly seemed worth saving. This woman had dedicated hers to causing fear and mayhem. She left nothing but misery and poverty in her wake. What type of person could look at themselves in the mirror living a life like that?

His eyes narrowed dangerously when she mentioned his son! How dare she bring him into this, even if she was only using the example of Michael in danger to illustrate her point? "Realistically, if the illusion was strong enough to fool me I would comply with your request." The concession was made through gritted teeth. The thirty-two-year-old did not even attempt to hide his sudden anger. There was no point in pretending otherwise. Michael was the most important thing in Christopher's life and he would do anything to keep him safe.

"However, I would make sure you lived to strongly regret such a slight" the words were barked out harshly. While he tried to live a simple life, and follow the rules, when it came to his family all bets were off. He would do anything to protect his son from becoming a victim of the most horrific crimes he'd seen in his line of work.

Auror Harrison forced himself to take several deep calming breathes. Although it was difficult, he could not allow his anger to get the best of him. It was unprofessional and could impair his judgement. Miss Albron had made him more determined to get to the bottom of this. He started to review the facts in his head. She had been there to help a mysterious figure with a debt collection.

It was then realisation struck and he chuckled in response. "My, my, Miss Albron you are a clever one." He complimented as his angry features grew smug. "You almost had me" he continued before he took several sips of his tea. The man used those few moments to collect his thoughts.

"You answered my final question, but let us get back to the first... who arranged for you to go to Azkaban that night? I think there's more to this, something you're not telling me... So let's not dawdle around the point any further. I want a name, and I want it now" She might come to regret giving an Auror who had originally viewed this as a time-wasting exercise a reason to give the investigation his all.

The Pureblood listened stone-faced as Spencer admitted they had a few options in mind for the pair of them. Of course, they'd gone off and begun negotiations before consulting either of them on the matter. His expression hardened at the word 'Weasley'. They wanted him to marry a close relation of those blood traitors with their garish red hair, hand-me-down robes, and utter disrespect for wizarding history and cultures? What had he done to offend Lord Abercrombie? The only thing worse would have been a mudblood. It was no wonder Victoria was practically hissing like an angry cat. It was only his keen sense of decorum that stopped him from doing the same.

He listened with a more open mind as Lord Abercrombie described the Flint girl. He had a vague recollection of a girl from that family in the year below him at Hogwarts. She had certainly been attractive, and surely she must be more than an air-head socialite if she was good enough to not only get into healing but oversee a whole department. The only thing that was putting him off was the close association with the Rosiers. While not as offensive a suggestion as a Weasley, Farren had made them sound like a total nightmare.

Pyxis hadn't a chance to even consider the Shacklebolt girl, as Victoria decided it was an opportune moment to interrupt. His expression darkened the more she spoke. Although it was subtle compared to some, anyone who knew him well would have recognised the Occlumens was outraged! How dare she speak of his future children in such a matter? Pyxis was everything they could ever want; classically handsome, of above-average intelligence with an almost prodigy-like affinity for the mind arts, well-mannered and beloved by the Media having once won a most eligible bachelor reward. He had lived his life thus far doing his duty to this family, and he would be damned if his children's prospects were in any way lowered because she wanted protection in the event her foolish decision to run around after a lunatic came back to haunt her. No, he would be providing his children with as many advantages as possible.

The Occlumens gave Farren a grateful look as she interjected with an amusing anecdote. A vague image of Carlin Shacklebolt came to mind; a seeker for the Gryffindor team if he recalled correctly and a rather successful one at that. He almost snorted when his favourite Cousin bluntly highlighted the abysmal choices he'd been given though he still thought the Flint girl was the most appealing option. He was thankful when Farren saved him from answering Farrah's query. While he was willing to engage in half-truths and misdirection an outright lie would have been going too far. Imagine the results if he were caught?

The Purebloods eyes widened as Farrah revealed their plans. They wanted Farren to marry a man more than a decade her elder? And not only that but one with two young children to boot! They didn't know their heir, did they? He listened to their conversation in silence and sure enough, there was the refusal he knew was coming! It was only then he finally spoke up.

"Don't be so ridiculous Farren" he commented with open exasperation. He avoided the gazes of their relatives guessing they thought it meant he would be fulfilling his role as the dutiful Cousin and siding with them. They were going to be sorely disappointed.

"There is no scenario where they would disown you. You are their granddaughter, their child, the only direct continuation of their line. You grew up in these halls under their guidance. Your strengths and your flaws can be attributed directly to them. If they were to disown you; it would bring scandal it would take generations for this family to recover from." His gaze turned to each of the occupants as if to dare them to contradict his rather blunt assessment of the situation. First Farrah, then Victoria, then Rawdon, and finally their patriarch Spencer, though the last took every ounce of his courage.

"However, your grandfather does have a valid point Cousin Farren. As purebloods, it is our duty to marry well and we can't derelict from that." It would be foolish of them to completely alienate the elders in their family, especially since it wasn't truly the idea of marriage and kids Farren protested, but who they'd chosen for her to spend her life with.

"Surely, in the interests of familial harmony, we could consider some sort of compromise." He was now addressing Spencer once more. The words were spoken in a gentle seemingly musing tone though the Abercrombie knew precisely where he was taking this. "Perhaps giving Cousin Farren a year to find someone of her own choice would be fitting. They would naturally have to be of good blood and able to bring the jewels Mr. Malfoy would have. If she is unable to independently find a suitable suitor by then she would have to marry Ambrose or whoever else you choose." Had Farren been truly single, as the family believed, it would have been a shoddy deal placing a lot of unfair pressure on his Cousin. But since she already had Mr. O'Dwyer waiting in the wings it was hardly a big ask of her.

Pyxis made contact with Farren's grandmother hoping that she at least would appreciate his attempts to negotiate rather than join in with the squabbling the others had fallen into.

The young Pureblood pressed on, as he decided it would be best to try and give them time to process Farren's rebellion and his comments before they responded. "As for my choices, I very much appreciate the efforts you've made with Miss. Shacklebolt, but aren't these unions about strengthening the family? And we wouldn't want an arrangement that led some foolish people into thinking we were doing the opposite would we?" It was a very clear dig at Victoria. The young Abercrombie was not able to resist despite his overall attempts to rise above the bickering.

"However, I would be delighted to at least meet Miss Sewlyn and Miss Flint" even if the idea of wedding a Weasley was frighteningly ghastly. However, some sort of concession had to be made.
